My interest in the stock market began shortly after beginning a career with a large retail banking operation. My migration over to the investment advisory business seemed like a natural progression for me as I would be combining my interests in money management with the fulfillment I get from being a people person. So I decided to take my licensing exams and in late 1999, I joined American Express Financial as a very green advisor in the Glendale branch office. I say “very green” because, as timing would have it, I was thrown into the pyres of an already challenging arena for the Y2K panic, a tech bubble crash, terrorist attacks, etc. Yet I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to sharpen my teeth among talented advisors that were conducting business during some of the most tumultuous markets in recent times.
In my early days, explaining to potential clients that equity markets don’t always earn 30% was the norm; nevertheless, their reaction was still one of disbelief. I had to work harder due to the fact that monkeys were making successful investment decisions by throwing darts at the Wall Street Journal. My determination was tested many times starting with the ongoing rejection I received from the do-it-yourselfers and collaborators that were convinced that tech stocks were the holy grail and the key to their dreams. This was, of course, a temporary dream that, for many, turned into a nightmare.
Although the environment was tough, I managed to build a clientele of loyal, hardworking professionals who sought honest, effective financial advice. After building my practice for a few years, I was handpicked by a select group of American Express Senior Advisors to join their practice. At that time (2003) I had earned several awards, achievement conferences, and certificates for my performance. I had also learned a lot from my peers, managers and staff. I was confident, eager, and excited about the opportunity to work with a team of professionals that had over 50 years of experience in the industry. And it was through that opportunity that I met my current business partner; thus, altering my career path into a direction I had always dreamed of.
I first met Chris when he was invited to speak to our firm about his investment philosophy, and more specifically, what led him to invest in gold and other commodities from 1999 to 2000. In 2000 gold was priced at $272 an ounce. At that time, based on his research and economic analysis, Chris decided to buy it for his clients. There were hardly any advisors even talking about commodities let alone making some serious allocations into them. It was apparent to me that Chris knew a lot of things that I didn’t, and I was extremely intrigued by what he had to say about the markets.
Up until this point all I had known about investing revolved around Modern Portfolio Theory. I was convinced, thanks to Chris, that there were more effective investment styles that could deliver higher returns with less risk to my clients. I was also convinced that in order for me to deliver the best results to my clients, I had to give them something I hadn’t known. This is when I realized that if I was going to be the advisor I wanted to be, and have the clientele and practice I had always dreamed of, I would need to partner up with the man, the myth, the legend…Christopher J. Haydel.
I am very proud of being a Principal/Owner of Haydel, Biel & Associates. More importantly, I am honored to be given the chance to help my clients grow and protect a very important aspect of their life. I take this responsibility very seriously and I use that motivation in my role of managing client relationships and making sure our team is serving all of our clients at the highest level. I’m excited about the next phase of my career and I welcome the opportunity to grow and expand our global reach and influence amongst our current and future clients.
